Big R Bridge recently designed and supplied a 192′ Tunable Bridge as part of a 10.5 mile light rail line extension through the City of Aurora, just east of Denver. The new bridge connects the Florida Station walk-up platform across the I-225 to a medical center and related facilities.
Bridge design tied in with station design
Big R designers were able to pick up on the curves and dark-green-with-copper color scheme of the platform. The bridge’s gracefully-sweeping arches make a strong architectural statement while the curved canopies on the elevator towers are a perfect match to the station’s canopy. The plexi-glass-enclosed walkway is bright and welcoming with pillar-style wayfinding signage and emergency call stations.
Weekend installation over two consecutive night closures
The bridge was delivered in four sections (two truss and two arch) from our Greeley, CO facility. It was assembled next to an off ramp about a mile away from the installation site. The transportation to the site and installation sequence took place over two consecutive night closures on a weekend.
The Tunable Bridge from Big R – clear spans of up to 400′
With clear spans of up to 400′, Big R’s Tunable Bridge is a structural hybrid that’s long on possibilities and short on costs. It combines the physics of a tied arch with any standard steel truss system or girder superstructure. An innovative adjustable structural system balances (or tunes) the live and dead loads between the arches and trusses. With no fracture-critical members, this redundant stress sharing system increases safety and allows for lighter, lower-cost material and longer, more-graceful designs.
