The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission’s ‘Safe & Sound’ Bridge Improvement Program is a two-phase program to improve 802 of the state’s lowest-rated bridges within five years through a single Design-Build contract with KTU Constructors.
Vist-A-Wall Precast Panel Walls play supporting role
Impressively, the KTU consortium completed the $685-million, effort before the end of 2012 — 14 months ahead of schedule. Big R Bridge is proud to have been a part of the second phase of this program by designing and supplying Vist-A-Wall MSE Structural Wall Systems for two of the three large overpass bridges that required them.
We had also teamed up with KTU in 2010 on another project under phase one of the program — a double box culvert river crossing with Vist-A-Wall headwalls.
One of the overpass bridges from phase two (shown here), crosses I-55 near Benton, MO. It was the first MoDOT installation using the Vist-A-Wall System’s new Grid-Strip Soil Reinforcement System and, with its skewed angle to the road, had some challenging custom wall corner panels.
The Grid-Strip System adapted easily to changing pile locations
In dealing with a large bridge span, specific pile locations can change several times and this project was no exception. When KTU notified us of changes, The Grid-Strip System’s inherent flexibility, allowed us to quickly modify the reinforcement layout to accommodate the new pile locations without creating any specialized reinforcement.
Happy with the results, KTU Constructors recommended us to Kiewit Power in Lenexa, KS, and two more Vist-A-Wall installations have been used on recent power plant projects.
