The new East Broadway Bridge in Hopewell, VA, was completed in May. Crossing over a Railroad spur, this new bridge has enabled emergency vehicles, school buses, and all other VDOT legal loads to cross the span, previously closed since 2014. Residents were previously forced to deal with lengthy detours that were frequently interrupted by passing trains.
Approach elevation limitations and rail clearance below eliminated the possibility of utilizing the original state-designed vehicular truss. After the initial award, Big R Bridge worked with the general contractor, city of Hopewell and VDOT to come up with a new solution. A galvanized Big R beam bridge was chosen as the only effective solution. The 24’ wide beam bridge with a composite deck was utilized. The 105’ bridge is comprised on a 3 span configuration with a 5’ sidewalk on one end.
