In Washington, DC, The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail serves as a 20-mile backbone of the riverfront, connecting residents, visitors and communities to the river and numerous commercial and recreational destinations.
As part of this accelerated project, Big R Bridge was selected to design and supply two large mixed-use trail bridges featuring FiberSPAN FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) deck panels. This lightweight decking (supplied by Composite Advantage) was used instead of the typical pour-in-place concrete deck, which shortened the installation time, reduced the dead load and allowed for lighter structural steel members.
Both the bridge deck and its weathering steel frame will reduce long-term maintenance costs and environmental impacts, in keeping with the District’s goal of increasing sustainability.
Crossing over large rail corridors, the new box truss bridges with their extensive curved approach ramps, are among the largest FRP decking structures in the US.
