“Scrappy” the Eagle and thousands of University of North Texas “Mean Green” football fans can now get across the I-35 to and from Apogee Stadium safer and faster, thanks to a new pedestrian crossing from Big R Bridge. Previously, they had to squeeze on to congested sidewalks on Denton’s busy North Texas Boulevard Bridge.
The new H-section pedestrian bridge is 354′ long with a 20′ wide cast-in-place concrete deck. It features an inverted shade canopy that echoes the stadium’s design. Other features include galvanized welded wire mesh side panels and weathering steel structural members.
Bridge abutments were provided by our AIL Group sister company, Vist-A-Wall Systems, complete with custom low-relief portraits of “Scrappy” keeping an eagle eye on passing motorists.
The bridge was installed in three sections, with the largest span over the highway being installed on a Friday night and Saturday morning in July to limit traffic issues. The finished bridge and approaches were ready in time for a televised home game on October 16 — which UNT won.
