The City of Fort Collins, CO, recently developed a new MAX Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and a handsome new Big R Bridge is providing a key interface with the Mason Corridor, a comprehensive bicycle/pedestrian trail system that links to many of the City’s amenities.
Three-section bridge installs in one day
The Spring Creek Station Overpass was supplied in three sections and installed in one day over the dedicated transit-only guideway and a BNSF rail line.
Roofing panels, safety mesh and railing systems were supplied by others. The structure also features ADA-compliant switchback ramps, security lighting and the 24-hr video surveillance common to the transit system.
Non-structural arches soften Box Truss design
As a special request, non-structural arches were incorporated to add a more-graceful, architectural look.
The overpass project rolled out in two stages, with the ramps and abutments constructed in the summer and early fall of 2013. The bridge portion was completed in late fall and early 2014. The City held a grand opening of the new transit system on May 5, 2014.
