An old flannel mill in Greensboro, NC became a dream site for a mixed use campus. One of Big R Bridge’s 230′ Pedestrian Truss solutions serves as a connection for this complex’s apartments, workspaces, restaurants, greenways, and more.
From Decline to a New Future
At its height in the 1930s, the mill was the largest exclusive flannel producer in the world. The industry collapsed in the 1980s and the mill shut its doors, leaving the historic Triad area building and campus unused. In 2003, work began on renovations which included event spaces and offices. A significant investment has brought this revitalization project to the wonderful historic and modern site that exists today.
With such a historical aesthetic, our weathering steel bow string truss was a perfect fit. The approaches are our pedestrian steel beam bridges which allow for clear views of the old mill. Ipe wood decking, cable safety rails, and light systems are unobtrusive, historic in appearance, and modern in function.. just like Revolution Mill.
