Adding value in Wyoming haul road crossing

Dry Fork Station Haul Road

Big R Bridge was recently able to provide added value in a Super•Cor® Arch haul road stream crossing serving Dry Fork Station in Wyoming. The customer saved on material, shipping and assembly costs with both the Super•Cor® Arch and the Stabilized Earth Walls, but substituting Steel Sheet Piling on one end brought even more value.

Dry Fork Station, currently under construction just north of Gillette, is a 422-megawatt coal-power plant, owned by Basin Electric Power Cooperative and the Wyoming Municipal Power Agency. Sub-bituminous coal from the nearby Dry Fork Mine will fuel the Station via a one-mile-long conveyor system. This project won the Interstate Mining Commission’s, Reclamation Project-of-the-Year Award for Wyoming and has been nominated for the national award.

With Stabilized Earth Walls on one side and a Steel Sheet Piling Wall on the other, our Super•Cor® Arch project was value-engineered to make the most of the project’s site and its budget. The inlet side was quite a bit larger, which made our Stabilized Earth Wall (MSE) more economical in both materials and construction. The MSE wall was also less invasive to the natural wetland that surrounded the area. The other side was smaller, making it a perfect fit for a Steel Sheet Piling headwall.

The Super•Cor® structure took exactly two days to erect and the Stabilized Earth Walls took about a week to erect and back fill. The sheet pile headwall was completed in two days.

The Ames Construction team leader commented that Super•Cor® was the easiest crossing structure his crew had ever put together. The 70', SCA2 Arch had a span of 35.67' and a rise of 17.83' with square ends and HS-25 loading. The MSE wall was 4,583 sf with a 75-year design service life.
