Wildlife crossing is Oregon DOT’s first Super•Cor project

A 265' Super•Cor Round wildlife crossing with step-beveled ends was recently specified and designed by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) for a canyon/wildlife crossing on their U.S. 20 Pioneer Mountain to Eddyville rerouting project. Most DOTs prefer the manufacturer to design crossings like this. The fact that ODOT designed their very first structural plate project ‘in-house’, however, is noteworthy. 

Super•Cor was most cost-efficient and flexible
The highway connects Oregon’s interior to its Pacific coast, with portions winding through mountainous logging country that is prone to creeping landslides and ground movement. ODOT considered both span bridge and concrete box solutions but found them to be too cost prohibitive and rigid for this application. They selected our deep corrugated Super•Cor solution for its favorable cost and flexibility.

Big R is a recognized leader in wildlife crossings 
Oregon is an award-winning proponent of safe and effective wildlife crossings and this canyon is a heavily used migration route. It was very fitting that Big R Bridge — also recognized leaders in wildlife crossings — was selected for this project.

The 28.4' diameter pipe was ordered, fabricated, delivered and installed in the March to July window in 2016. The project was completed in mid October 2016, providing a considerable time saving compared to traditional bridge alternatives. The crossing was designed, manufactured and installed in accordance with AASHTO LRFD and ODOT requirements.

Deep corrugated structural plate flexible buried bridges are becoming more common as wildlife crossings, grade separations, hydraulic crossings and other applications with state DOTs. Decision-makers like their flexibility, ability to provide long spans, ABC advantages, economy, resilience and other factors compared to traditional bridges and concrete structures.
