Pedestrian Bridge spans LBJ Freeway upgrade in North Dallas

May 9, 2012

truss1Big R Bridge recently installed a longer, wider replacement bridge for the popular Joe Ratcliff Walkway in North Dallas. The new 314' dual span pedestrian bridge crosses over the upgraded LBJ Freeway – a large design-build project that is one of the first of its kind in Texas.

A Public Private Partnership

The LBJ Freeway (I-635) Managed HOV Lanes Project is the most regionally significant transportation improvement project in North Texas. The project is being delivered through a Comprehensive Development Agreement (CDA), a public-private partnership that gives transportation agencies the important elements to build projects – money, innovation and resources.

Due to the volume of traffic on this major transportation corridor, challenges on this project included a compressed design phase and significant delivery/installation limitations around lane reduction time windows. We overcame these challenges by working very closely with the design-build group and developing a schedule that would work for everyone.

Extremely tight installation window

Big R also introduced the partnership to The Fain Group and together we were able to offer the complete turn-key solution they were looking for in the tight time frame. The bridges had to be set with no previous work being done because of the specific window the Texas DOT would allow the I-635 to be reduced down to two lanes.

The bridge was delivered in four sections, with each of the dual spans being assembled on the ground before being placed on successive nights of one weekend. Installation time was less than three weeks.
