Vist-A-Walls and Pedestrian Bridge squeeze into narrow Colorado river canyon

October 22, 2013

CDOT Highway 119 - Black Hawk HDR 001Our Vist-A-Wall MSE Structural Wall Systems and a Pedestrian Bridge are close companions in the Highway 119 widening project near the historic gold rush town of Black Hawk, CO – now a popular tourist destination.

Walls curve and tier to follow narrow creek

The highway and recreational trail wind their way up a narrow canyon, so access to the site was limited. Curved, angled and tiered to meet the requirements of the tight site, the walls required extra design considerations.

Unique wall texture and color

Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) had specified their “Colorado Random Reveal” texture for the precast panels. This texture is used frequently in the mountain regions and also can be seen in Denver along the I-25. To blend in with the canyon’s natural stone, the precast components were painted a warm tone after installation.

140' Pedestrian Bridge also part of the mix

Big R supplied an H-Section Pedestrian bridge on this Colorado Department of Transportation project. The naturally-weathering steel structure shipped in two 70' sections and was quickly placed on its Vist-A-Wall abutments.

Bridge and abutment packages from Big R

Although the wall and bridge components of this project were bid on and won separately, Vist-A-Wall Systems has since become a Division of Big R Bridge — a strategic move that has made us better-positioned to package more value and expertise to your advantage.
