Big R Signature Bridge wins holiday lighting contest in Fort Lupton, CO

December 11, 2013

More than just bridges, Signature Bridges combine beauty with functionality to make bold architectural statements and become community focal points. Already a Signature Bridge in every way, this 256' pedestrian crossing really took center stage when it won first prize in Fort Lupton’s Annual Holiday Lighting Contest.

Double Bowstring design a natural for center stage
And speaking of center stage, the gracefully-sweeping arcs of this Double Bowstring Truss design flank a pedestrian overlook feature, making it a complete natural for the symmetrical lighting installation.

No stranger to the night lights
Fort Lupton is only 30 miles straight down Highway 85 from of our plant in Greeley. This was a huge advantage over our competitors, as it let us fabricate and ship longer spans more economically. Normally restricted to about 80' for shipping, the twin 110' sections eliminated the need for truss splices, saving on fabrication and assembly. Also, special arrangements were made with the Colorado Department of Transportation to roll the trucks at night with road and exit closures in effect without the more-costly oversize permitting.

A bright focal point for a vibrant community
Visible from a major highway interchange, the bridge is both a focal point and important connection for Fort Lupton. Previously, pedestrians and cyclists had to use narrow sidewalks on a busy vehicular bridge, to reach the ball diamonds at Pearson Park across the South Platte River.

Established in 1836 as the fur trading post of Fort Lancaster by former US Dragoon Lieutenant, Lancaster Platt Lupton, the vibrant City of Fort Lupton lives on today just northeast of Denver — complete with a replica of the original Fort.
