525' Big R Pedestrian Bridge part of Austin’s MoPac Improvement Project

July 12, 2017

MoPac, named after the original Missouri Pacific Railway line running along the route, is one of the most important transportation corridors into downtown Austin. The 11-mile MoPac Improvement Project added express toll lanes and other enhancements without widening the highway’s footprint. Along with that, came significant improvements to the area’s shared use path system, including a new 525' Big R Pedestrian Bridge across the corridor and the rail line – now a Union-Pacific line.

Bridge delivered in three sections
The 525' crossing featured three steel box truss sections supported by two concrete piers. Big R produced the spans at our Greeley, Colorado facility and shipped one span a week over a three week period using our highly-specialized tandem hauling partners. The spans were installed on three successive weekend night closures by offloading from an adjacent overpass.

Naturally-weathering steel: saves now, saves later
A naturally-weathering steel finish was selected to provide long service with very little future maintenance. Weathering steel typically provides initial cost savings of 10 percent or more, and maintenance savings of at least 30 percent over the life of the structure.

Big R Bridge specializes in pedestrian crossings for the rail sector
Our Prefabricated Pedestrian Bridges are ideal for today’s demanding light rail and intermodal crossings. Modular components for spans of up to 400' can be assembled and installed in one day with limited interruption to rail traffic. Here are a few examples:
